From Shelter to New Safe Confinement Chornobyl booklet

On 26 April 1986 at 1:23:49 a.m. Moscow time accident occurred at power unit 4 of the Chomobyl NPP, which as regards its scale and consequences became the major and the most severe accident in the history of nuclear industry. Reac-tor core as well as all the protective barriers and safety systems were destroyed as a result of explosion. Major activity releases in the environment lead to contamination of vast areas.

Efforts taken in the course of elimination of Chomobyl NPP accident consequences were mostly focused on construction of the protective enclosure over the destroyed reactor that was named the Shelter Object.
