Pripyat dock cranes, located around Yanov backwater about 2.5km from the city centre, were used to unload supplies for the power plant and the city of Pripyat. The backwater has been cut off from the Pripyat River following the Chernobyl accident, likely to prevent contaminating the river with radioactive isotopes flowing from the land surrounding the power plant.
